A Work in Progress
Born in New Plymouth – started in a studio learning the ropes before seeking the bright lights and action of newspaper life. Worked for a local New Plymouth paper before heading for a metropolitan paper in Auckland and to Britain and Fleet St. The next seventeen years were working around the world for major papers and magazines ending as Picture Editor on the New Zealand Herald in Auckland.
Left newspapers in 1984 and entered the corporate market taking advertising, public relations and industrial photos from a studio base in trendy Parnell in Auckland. In 1995 moved the operation to the oldest homestead in Canterbury (South Island) where a restored 1864 stables became the centre of fashion photography for catalogues.
2020 is my 53rd year as a photographer – I have covered most avenues of photography – worked for the rich and famous and most of the worlds leading magazines and companies. I have covered four America’s Cup regattas as Team New Zealand’s inhouse photographer – Photographed Elle McPherson and the Bendon range in Australia. Achieved two front covers of Time International – worked on a private job for The Queen. Spent more than 250 hours in helicopters and survived two helicopter crashes.
I work from New Plymouth, having returned after 32 years “on the road”. I have established a digital photo library with over twenty thousand images – all high resolution files – a library I have been working on since I changed to digital photography in 1999. The images cover extensive and varied photography subjects. The library is strong in the New Zealand way of life especially tourism, industry and lifestyle.
In 2004 I teamed up with partner Orm Greensill and formed Tucker Media – a publishing arm to Rob Tucker Photography. With Orm’s extensive business experience and encouragement we have produced books on New Zealand lifestyle, region by region. From these publications we have expanded into specialist publications and the list of titles is growing. Over the last few years we have produced and published 24 books – from regional NZ picture books Palmerston North & Manawatu being the latest – to childrens books in the “Where Does….come from“?
